Fire of Peace
(original article in Japanese is here)

The first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima at 8:15AM, August 6th, 1945. Even today, 65 years later, the flame of this atomic bomb continues to light at Fukuoka-prefecture Yame-city Hoshino-Village.

Tatsuo Yamamoto who was on military duty as a soldier during the time was exposed to the radiation of the atomic bomb of Hiroshima. Tatsuo Yamamoto who survived through this disastorous experience went to look or his uncle who owned a bookstore. However, he could not find him. The aftermath of the bookstore was fire and smoke. As a memoir of his uncle, Tatsuo Yamamoto took the fire home to Hoshino-Village on a heading oil pad. He protected this fire as a sign so that we will not forget the terrible experience of the war. In 1968, this fire was handed to Hoshino-Village as a memoir of the war, and is safely continuing to burn.
In 1995, 50 years from the Hiroshima atomic bomb, Hoshino-Village built the “Tower of Peace” and this fire was named as the “Fire of Peace.” Hoshino- Village continues to hold a peaceful ceremony every year on August 6th.

Tatsuo Yamamoto passed away in the year 2004. His son Takudou Yamamoto took after his father and continues to preach the experience of the war to schools in Hoshino-Village. Many children who listed to Takudou’s story wrote letters to him. Here is one example of a letter from a child.

In the stories of Tatsuo Yamamoto, there was an explanation that when the atomic bomb was dropped and many people exposed to this bomb laid on the street, they cried out “Please kill me” and strangled their necks to kill themselves. When I heard of this situation I was in shocked, and for the first time realized the terror of being in a war.
